Will Battlefield 3 finally end the Call of Duty monopoly?

I loved the original Bad Company but hated the gameplay of Bad Company 2. Neither came close to challenging the dominance of COD. Having watched the gameplay trailers for Battlefield 3 I’m pretty excited about that game and it looks set to raise the bar for the FPS genre.

So just wondered what others thought – will BF3 prove to be a true rival? As much as I love COD games I think some real competition would push them to innovate instead of becoming complacent. I’d love to see a destruction engine similar to Frostbite introduced into COD.

I like how Battlefield 3 takes us to the present. I pretty much hated BC2 and Black Ops, because of the ancient guns and machinery they used, was never a fan of pre-war FPS. A friend pointed out that the Battlefield series has pretty much been a yearly release.

    2011 Battlefield 3
2010 Battlefield: Bad Company 2: Vietnam
    2010 Battlefield: Bad Company 2
    2009 Battlefield: 1943
    2008 Battlefield: Bad Company
    2007 Battlefield: 2142: Northern Strike
    2006 Battlefield: 2142
    2006 Battlefield 2: Armored Fury
    2006 Battlefield 2: Euro Forces
    2005 Battlefield 2: Modern Combat
    2005 Battlefield 2: Special Forces
    2005 Battlefield 2
    2004 Battlefield: Vietnam
2003 Battlefield: 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII
2003 Battlefield: 1942: The Road to Rome
    2002 Battlefield: 1942

…while COD has only 7 iterations. I think so many releases has been an issue and the multiplayer is heavily tactical and semi co-op rather than having 2 massive teams go at it. COD is a casual game honestly while Battlefield wins with the more hardcore FPS fans out there, hence COD will always be on top. However I don’t think PS3 and PC fans liked Black Ops that much and I myself will never buy another COD game unless Infinity Ward makes it. Otherwise, Battlefield 3 has to come really good to win the crowds. I am afraid to purchase it honestly, because I bought BC2 and barely played it in comparison to MW2 (yea I still play that).
