Twitter has announced via their blog that they have acquired the popular Twitter iPhone app, Tweetie. They have entered into an agreement with Atebits to have the app renamed to Twitter For iPhone, and they will be making it free for all iPhone users who can access the iTunes store. Loren Brichter, the developer of the app has also joined the Twitter team so he can continue to head up the development of the app.

They also mention that once the ground work has been established, there will be room for development and modification on both the iPhone and iPad. 3rd party developers will be able to create their own customized apps or systems when they launch.
