PSN Pass to clamp down on the pre-owned game dealers

Sony has officially announced its PSN Pass service, which is said to limit the number of times a game is used.

Select new games will come with an activation code which allows full access to the content, but if the game is sold on the used market, second-hand buyers will be required to purchase a PSN Pass code to unlock the game. This initiative is a process to help bring revenues back to the game developers. When games go on sale on the used market, developers do not make any profits on used purchases. They only profit from the first time buyer, but games could be sold many times, allowing the used game dealers to cash in easily without passing some of the profits to the developers themselves.

Electronic Arts and THQ have already jumped on the train, promising that all copies of Resistance 3 for the PS3 will come with a one-time pass code for first time buyers. So far the PSN Pass program is game specific, leaving the option of adding the pass code up to the developers.

The SCEA (Sony Computer Entertainment America) has expressed that game developers have been robbed of earnings because of the lucrative used-market, and they are trying to take back a piece of the pie to help motivate developers to continue working and outputting great games. We are totally in support of the move, if it does help developers to put the extra ounce of awesomeness into the developing process. Electronic Arts also has such an initiative called the EA Online Pass.

IT REALLY DOESN’T MATTER ALL THE USED GAME RETAILERS HAVE TO DO IS COME DOWN 5-10 DOLLARS OFF THE PRICE AND STILL MAKE A HUGE PROFIT DEVELOPERS ARE TRYING TO DICTATE WHAT PEOPLE SHOULD DO WITH THEIR OWN GAMES DEVELOPERS NEED TO STOP BEING GREEDY AND MAKE MORE EXTENSIVE AND BETTER GAMES AND MAYBE PEOPLE WILL BUY THEM “NEW” AS FOR ME I SUPPORT USED GAME SALES 100 PERCENT BECAUSE WHY KEEP THE GEARS OF WAR 2 WHEN I CAN TRADE IT IN AND GET MONEY OFF THE NEW ONE OR WHY BUY A “NEW” SINGLE PLAYER GAME WHICH LAST ONLY 4 HOURS FOR 60 DOLLARS RATHER THAT PAY 20 DOLLARS USED ALL HAIL GAMESTOP!

What’s with all the hate? I never buy used games so this doesn’t affect me in any way. I sometimes sell games back to shops, but again this won’t affect me. Why is everyone saying this is the end of the world? Pay the developers for developing a good game, not a stupid store that sell you games with damaged boxes and pretend its a new game.

so all in all no more renting games, no more buying used, retailers will stop doing the trade in games and we will only buy the really good games as for the games that we think are not worth buying brand new we wont buy them till they come down in price in 4-6 months leaving the developers with little to no money unless they are a proven franchise, so wat this will do it eliminate small time developers and leave the juggernauts of EA ACTTVISON  to only buy there games, so all in all the developers might think this is a great move until nobody buys there games because its not worth the money great job sony, i am completely flustered at how u have been dealing with the ps3, first u take away features of a console system, then u refuse to be hacked, now this s**t i am a loyal fan and lover of play station but u are killing me, i own 3 ps3 and tell everyone to get one but now im just going to c wat else u take away before i get the next gen system cuz if threre going to pull this over and over and not think about hte consumer im done with sony only thing xbox has to do for me is make a playstion controller and im switching just my opinion sony.

Are you serious? games on the 360 use the exact same system, it’s not down to sony its down the game specific developer!!

This statement is moronic at best.  You say it doesn’t affect you and then immediately admit to selling used games back yourself… this means you are DIRECTLY involved in this.  The auto industry doesn’t ask me for a share of the profit when I sell or trade a used vehicle.  Hardware prices are brought down annually, how about dropping the prices on used titles?  60 bucks for a game I might use for a week or 2… then even if its a cool title with a long online lifespan, the consumer still gets the shaft with obscene DLC prices. Gamestop all the way.

  • jess

*sorry, i meant dropping the prices on NEW titles.*

They do drop prices it’s the retards that have to have that mediocre to horrible game the day it comes out or the same week that can’t wait for it….Or its the idiots that seem to think a call of doodie game should drop in price 3 weeks after it comes out why would a developer drop the price of a game that is selling like hotcakes. Those with patience get the price drops because not everyone has to get every game with multiplayer day 1. Some people don’t even play the multiplayer

Gamestop tried that for a minute and cried about the loss now they give you the online code so they can charge 54 again
