It’s great news for PS3 fans who’ve been looking to the Steam online collaboration, in the midst of Portal 2′s release next week.

Valve has given a bit of insight into how Steam will work while you play the game. One of the biggest features in the ability to play in cross platform matches, which means folks on the PC, PS3 and Mac can now join into one session, rather than being split into separate rooms depending on the console. Also Save-games will be hosted on the Steam Cloud, which means users can go from one PS3 to another and pick up where they left off.

The Steam Overlay brings many of the PC/Mac features onto the PS3, such as a Friends List, Chat, Achievements and News. They have given users the option to either create new Steam accounts (that would be pegged with their PSN ID) or use their PSN ID to login to existing Steam accounts. If users link up to their already created account (used for PC/Mac gaming), this means they can share the same Friends list, show achievements on their community profile and unlock Portal 2 achievements on Steam in general. As mentioned before, friends on both Steam and PSN will be able to play together in the same matches.

One of the biggest surprises is the ability to use a one-time code (included in the PS3 copy of Portal 2) to download a PC or Mac version of the game to the relevant system. Yes, that means you will have a copy of Portal 2 on the PS3 and on the PC or Mac (depending on what system you have). Clearly they have limited it to the same user account, so that means your friend cannot use the code on his account to download it to the PC (no free games here).

So with all this integration, will Portal 2 be the biggest game of the year?
