Osama Bin Laden spam blows up across Facebook

Posted by on 04/05/2011

With the announcement of Osama Bin Laden being “killed” rocking the world last night, the usual Facebook spammers have jumped on the bandwagon, taking advantage of such a momentous occasion.

Some of the spam links promise users the ability to view exclusive photos and videos of the dead body, and while most of the media circulating around the Internet is photoshopped, the spam sites inadvertently trick users into liking the page. These pages are once again traps to get users to take surveys which generate revenue for the spammers once they are answered. Users are promised to see the raw footage once they complete the surveys, but in reality they see the same crappy shopped images which have made its rounds on the net, while the spammers put some easy cash into their pockets.

Some of the popular links include the Bin Laden EXECUTION! Yes it’s Real! and the Osama Dead – Censored Video Leaked. Titles like these easily draw in attention, considering the circumstances under which the real announcement was made. Users clearly want to see more footage of the body and easily fall prey for the scam links.

Problems like this have arisen time and time again and we think Facebook should take a stand to modify their Open Graph code so spammers cannot integrate it into their applications to trick users into liking malicious websites. Even though it does allow for flexibility with some apps, obviously some will use it for the wrong reasons.

Yea, it is rather annoying seeing my wall get covered in spam.
