Even after the endless stories criticizing the Apple iPad, they already sold one million models and the 3G model has run out much faster than they expected it would. Apple last reported that 13 stores across the nation in prominent locations ran out of iPad 3G units. International sales are expected to be just as good when it goes on sales on May 28th.
There are many theories for the shortage. Some say a lack of LCD screens limited their production, maybe because of underestimated sales expectations. The iPad hit the one million mark in 1/3 the time of the iPhone. Maybe Apple didn’t think it would be as popular, but with the iPad using the same OS structure from the iPhones and iPod Touches, as well as very similar applications, they should have expected more.
Some are of the view that stocks are being limited to accommodate the needs of international customers. Even though they did have 2 per purchase limits in place, it still did not help control US sales from skyrocketing. The WiFi models are also in high demand on a limited basis, with the lowest end 16GB model being offered first.
