If you thought hacking your iPhone was pretty awesome, you may want to meet Albert Gonzalez aka “SoupNazi”. He was arrested and pleaded guilty to charges of massive credit card fraud. Yesterday, he was slapped a 20 year sentence for the extensive damage he inflicted upon the financial industry. He played a lead role in stealing over 40 million credit card numbers and also hacked into several debit accounts.
He was able to intercept various banks’ wireless data signals and planted a trojan into the system, allowing him to gather a plethora of confidential data. He then sold the credit/debit card information to international clients, causing about $200 million in damages. Of course he couldn’t go home empty handed! He stole about $2.8 million for himself.
He was also responsible for hacking into Heartland Payment, causing $130 million in damages. His sentence will be decided today, and will be served concurrently with the one mentioned above unfortunately.
Have something to say? 2 others did.
