**Update** – The service is back online, seems to have been a server issue.

Reports are coming in that the popular Facebook share button service has gone down worldwide.

We don’t know as yet if this is a maintenance issue or just the complete removal of the button. What makes it seem like the latter is the fact that the Share Button page has been redirected to Facebook’s Like Button Page. If this is really the case, then it was inevitable. With Facebook moving towards to standardizing its “Like” program across the net, it would be in their best interest to ditch the Share button for the new Like button.

A few sites still have the button (e.g. Mashable), but that’s because they use a custom scripted code.

The first sign came when they set the share and like count to be the same on the pages they were included on. If a story was shared by a person, and then liked by 9 other people on that person’s personal profile, it would show up as 10 shares or 10 likes, depending on which button was place.

The like button was introduced to engage less interactive users on external sites and on Facebook itself. With the share button, you would have to click the button, let the box appear and maybe enter some descriptive text and then share it to your profile page. With the like button, you just click and the link automatically shows up on your profile as a one-liner stating that you liked a certain page.

Personally, this is a bit disappointing since a liked link is less visible that a shared post.
