Apple banning sale of iPhone Screen Protectors in its stores?

According to a number of rumors from Apple fan websites and from a few Apple store branch owners, it seems they will discontinue selling the popular film screen protectors for the iPhone, iPod, and Mac. These protectors help protect the screens from grease and being scratched, while other users have it to reduce reflection glare from lighting sources above (e.g. sun, office lights).
Apple has not commented on why they suddenly want to discontinue the sale (both via online and physical stores) but many fans and general consumers have already expressed their opinion about the situation.
Some of the speculations include the problem of film application to the screen. Many times, consumers put on the film but end up have a few air bubbles or ripples, obviously causing it to look imperfect. Since the application process is so difficult, consumers may ask for a refund or an exchange. Another problem stems from the marketing aspect. The protector usually assists in keeping the screen scratch and grease-free, essentially adding to its life value. However, without a protector, the screen may get damaged easily and some enthusiasts may end up buying another iPhone or iPod. Mac fans see it this little strategy as a way to squeeze more sales out of customers.
Another looming theory related to the iPad. The experts speculate that Apple may not want to give future owners the idea that they “need” to purchase the protector with their iPad, maybe they are using a newer and more resistant screen technology. There are other reasons which basically put Apple in the spotlight of trying to rip-off consumers as well. For now though, we wait for an official response from Apple. What do you think about the scenario though? Are they trying to get us to buy more in the long term or do they actually have new tech to enhance screen protection?
